This article provides information on Communication Error transaction status in Authorize.net and how to address it.

What is a communication error transaction?

A transaction status labeled as Communication Error signifies that Authorize.net did not receive a response, either an approval or decline, from your processing network during the transaction request. This is due to a disruption in communication with your Payment Processor. Since no response or authorization code was received from the Payment Processor, the transaction is marked as an error. As a result, you will not be charged a transaction fee by Authorize.net.

Has the Payment Processed?

In most cases the transaction and payment have not process if the transaction status is labeled as "Communication Error". The transaction did not complete successfully due to the communication issue with the Payment Processor. It is recommended to double-check with your Merchant Service Provider (MSP) to confirm that the transaction did not process on their end, despite the communication error. This ensures there are no discrepancies or duplicate charges.

Solution:

  1. Verify that your Payment Processor is not experiencing any outages or issues.
  2. Retry the transaction after confirming that the communication channels are functioning properly.
  3. If the issue persists, contact Authorize.net Client Services. Provide support with the transaction details and error code for a more accurate diagnosis.
