This article will guide merchants through the update and migration to the new Authorize.net Shopify Plugin.

Prerequisites

Migration Deadline

  • You must complete the migration by August 31, 2025 to avoid payment disruptions.
  • After this date, the legacy Authorize.net gateway will be decommissioned, and card payments will not be available at checkout.

Step-by-Step Migration Instructions

  1. Log in to your Shopify Admin Portal.
  2. Go to Settings > Payments > Alternative Providers.
  3. Select Authorize.net and follow the prompts to install the new Authorize.net payments app - New Authorize.net Shopify Plugin
  4. Activate the new Authorize.net app.
  5. Deactivate the legacy Authorize.net app from your Shopify dashboard.
  6. Verify that card payments are functioning by performing a test transaction.
For detailed migration steps, see the Migration/Upgrade Guide.

Key Changes and Known Gaps

  • Transaction ID Visibility: Shopify Payment ID replaces the Authorize.net Transaction ID as the primary identifier. The Payment ID appears in the "Description Field" in Authorize.net’s Merchant Interface.
  • Third-Party Applications: All reference IDs are changing. For example, order fulfillment or capture requests can no longer use the Authorize.net Payment Transaction ID. Third-party apps must use the new Shopify Payment ID for order fulfillment and capture requests, this mainly impacts Subscription and OMS/ERP Order Management/Fulfilment apps. Please contact Shopify for integration updates.
  • Customer Information Manager (CIM) (Profiles/Tokens) and Recurring Billing (Subscriptions):
    • If you have already migrated Customer Information Manager (Profiles/Tokens) and recurring Billing (Subscriptions) to Shopify, you only need to migrate to the new Authorize.net Shopify Plugin - no additional profile or token migration is required.
    • If you have stored customer profiles with Authorize.net and have not previously migrated the tokens to Shopify, you will need to complete a token migration from Authorize.net to Shopify’s Token Vault using the process outlined here.
    • Migrating existing subscriptions to Shopify will allow you to continue charging your existing subscribers without experiencing any disruption in service.
  • Fraud Management: Fewer data fields are available for fraud decisioning. Review and adjust your fraud settings. Manual fraud review actions in Shopify are no longer supported, and the fraud review window is now 15 minutes.
    • Due to the limited information received by Authorize.net through the Payment Provider Platform API, there are currently restrictions on the fields available for making fraud prevention decisions. In the meantime, merchants are advised to review and adjust their fraud settings to ensure that informed decisions can be made with the presently available data.
    • Manual fraud review actions in Shopify are no longer supported, and the fraud review window is now 15 minutes. We recommend implementing an Accept/Reject payment model for transactions originating from Shopify. Efforts are underway with Shopify to extend this response period in the future.
  • IP Address Transmission: Effective May 9, 2025, Shopify will transmit the actual customer IP address to Authorize.net for improved fraud detection. The 'Customer IP' field in transaction details will now reflect the actual customer IP address instead of Shopify’s server address.
  • Refunds: Refunds for legacy transactions must be processed in the Authorize.net Merchant Interface. Refunds can be processed through the legacy integration for up to 6 months after migration.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • Why is this migration required? Shopify updated its payment infrastructure, requiring all payment partners to transition to the new system. More information here.
  • How are subscriptions supported? Subscriptions are supported using a compatible third-party subscription provider. Token storage is managed by Shopify’s vault. More information here.
  • How do I match transactions? Use the Shopify Payment ID found in the order’s payment information. In Authorize.net, this ID appears in the transaction’s description field.
    • In the Shopify Admin Panel, to find this ID, open the order, expand “…Payment was processed on authorize.net,” and check the “information from the gateway” section.
    • Due to length limits, the ID cannot be provided in any other fields, future work is planned to improve this.
  • What are other gaps or changes?
    • The new Payment App now uses Shopify's Payment ID as the main identifier, so a dedicated Transaction ID field is no longer available.
    • With the updated reference IDs, all third-party apps must now use the new Shopify ID instead of the Authorize.net Payment Transaction ID for tasks like order fulfillment or capture requests.
    • Customer Information Manager and Recurring Billing are no longer available through the payment app. Merchants must migrate customer profiles to Shopify’s token vault to use subscription billing.
    • Subscription processing is no longer available directly through the payment app; a third-party subscription provider is required to handle subscription processing.
  • What are the features supported in the new integration?
    • Transaction Types
      • Sale (Auth & Capture)Authorization (Authorize Only)
      • Capture (Capture Only)
      • Void (Reversal)
      • Refund (Credit)
        • If the transaction is settled, then a partial refund is allowed.
        • A partial refund is not supported for non-settled transactions. In this case, it will void the transaction with the full amount.
        • Transactions processed on the legacy app will need to be refunded through the legacy app. Refunds can be processed through the legacy integration up to 6 months after the merchant has migrated to the new app.
